Local Orthopedic Surgeons Conducts Seminar at Morselife

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (June 25, 2007) – MorseLife was recently the site for a seminar on, “Fast Recovery: Total Hip & Total Knee Replacement.” The seminar was conducted by Dr. Gregory Martin, an area board certified orthopedic surgeon, fellowship trained in hip and knee reconstructive surgery from Harvard Medical School. He specializes in hip and knee arthritis and other related painful conditions. In addition, Dr. Martin has extensive experience and training in state-of-the-art surgical options and possesses special expertise in “complex revision/failed total hip and knee surgery.”

The audience in the Shapiro Auditorium at Morse Geriatric Center heard about a multitude of related topics such as common reasons for degenerative knee or hip conditions, symptoms, surgery recovery and non-operative treatments.

Dr. Martin was quick to point out that knee or hip replacement surgery is an elective procedure and the individual should really be aware of when this (knee or hip replacement surgery) is right for them. Typically, a patient is considering elective surgery when there is persistent pain or difficulty in performing a basic function or task.

It is interesting to note that 600-800 thousand of these procedures are now done annually in the United States with a 90-95% success rate. In studying the history of these procedures over a 30-year course, it was discovered that our aging population is leading a very active lifestyle and that the initial projected timeframe for a knee replacement (for example) to last has gone from 10-25 years plus.

Dr. Karl Dhana, MorseLife Medical Director stated, “Dr. Martin is extremely qualified about knee and hip replacements and has certainly educated our audience today regarding these elective surgeries. His extensive knowledge was clearly demonstrated in dealing with the host of audience questions.”
