Custom knee surgery brings patients less pain

Dr. Gregory Martin is certainly at home in one of JFK Medical Center’s operating suites doing a midday knee replacement. But these days the orthopedic surgeon is going custom.

“As we all know when we go shopping, sometimes you’re not a small or a medium or a large,” said Martin. “You’re between sizes, and with a shirt it probably doesn’t matter that much.”

But with a knee, Martin said, even being off just a little big can hurt. He cited a study that reports just 3 millimeters off with a knee implant — too large or too small — can cause pain.
